In Macau, public holidays are referred to as mandatory holidays, many of which are based on ancient Chinese culture. There are officially 10 mandatory holidays, a few of which span three or more days, such as the Lunar New Year.
In addition to mandatory holidays, Macau honours several observances including Good Friday, the day before Easter, the Feast of Buddha and the Dragon Boat Festival. Christian holidays are regarded as observances. Time off is discretionary, based on the terms of an employment contract or union bargaining agreement.
